Bika 50th Edition: Netball championship throws off with 24 teams

Bika Netball championship officially threw off at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, the 20th April 2024.

The Buganda Kingdom Minister for Youth, Sports and Arts Ssalongo  Robert Serwanga was the chief guest at St Lawrence as the 50th  edition  of the Bika Byabaganda Netball tournament threw off.

During his speech at the opening ceremony, minister Serwanga requested the participating clans to give the best display and lauded individuals who fund different clan teams for a tremendous job.

“Whoever has supported his or her clan financially, thank you so much.

Our organizing committee and partners we appreciate you for the job well-don. It’s now a task for us  to develop this game. We have recently seen the Netball national team representing us so well at the international tournaments.

“I believe one successful netballer can develop and help a very big community and therefore, let’s provide them with all the support they need.

“Us guided and spearheaded by His Majesty the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi Kimera II, the theme of men being the leaders in the fight against HIV is still on.  It’s our responsibility to protect the girl child and let us not forget that.”

On his arrival at St.Lawrence University, minister Serwanga was welcomed by Hajji Sulaiman Magala the chairman Bika Byabaganda Football and Netball Committee (BIFONEC), vice  chairperson BIFONEC Dr. Sarah Muwonge Nkonge, Hon Patrick Nsanja the MP for Ntenjeru North, Gerald Katamba BIFONEC Secretary among others.

William Bwambale the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association chairman and Jocelyn Ucanda the chairperson NIC Netball team were also in attendance.

Bwambale donated 62 Netball balls and water to Bika Netball championship. The balls are to be given to all this year’s participating clan teams.

This year’s edition attracted 24 clan teams, the highest turn up recorded in the past ten years.
