Uganda’s U-17 national football team, the Cubs, emerged victorious in the 2025 Afcon U-17 qualifiers (Cecafa zone), held at the Hamz Stadium in Kampala.

The Cubs staged a remarkable comeback, recovering from a goal down to defeat Tanzania 2-1 in the thrilling finale on Friday, December 27, 2024.

The match got off to an explosive start, with Abel Josiah Samson scoring the opening goal for Tanzania in the 11th minute.

His venomous shot found the roof of the net, leaving Uganda’s goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi with no chance.

Tanzania nearly doubled their lead two minutes later, but Josiah’s shot off his left foot rattled the crossbar.

The Cubs regrouped in the second half and made amends with two beautifully crafted goals.

Arafat Nkoola equalized in the 62nd minute, beating goalkeeper Abrahman Nassoro from close range.

James Bogere then sealed the win with a priceless strike in the 87th minute, securing the trophy and the golden boot award with his seventh goal of the competition.

The tournament’s individual awards were also announced, with Uganda’s Abubakali Walusimbi being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Tanzanian goalkeeper Abrahman Nassoro was recognized as the best goalkeeper, while James Bogere took home the top scorer award. Tanzania received the fair play trophy.

Both Uganda and Tanzania qualified for the Afcon U-17 tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco in 2025.

In the third-place play-off, Somalia secured bronze with a 4-2 post-match penalty victory over South Sudan, following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
