AFCON2021Q: Tony Mawejje Earns First National Team Call Since 2017

The newly acquired Police FC experienced midfielder and captain, Tony Mawejje earned his first National team the Cranes call since October 2017.

Mawejje, 33, is among the 22 local based players, Cranes head coach Jonathan McKinstry summoned to start training on Monday 02nd 2020 as the nation getting prepared for 2021 AFCON qualifier doubleheader fixture against neighbors South Sudan slated for between 12th and 16th November 2020, home and away respectively.

Mawejje last donned the famous, Cranes shirt six Jersey in October 2017 (2018 World Cup qualifier goalless draw against Ghana at Namboole) when Micho Milutin Sredojević was still in charge of the National team head of technical bench.

When Sebastien Desabire took over, Mawejje who had his national team debut in 2003 never appeared again though he has been always optimistic that he will get another chance because he is always ready to serve the National flag.

In his first spell at the National team, the former FK Tirana, SC Villa, URA midfield maestro scored a number of vital goals in over 80 international appearances.

The other players McKinsty summoned and they have been missing in previous squads are; Murushid Juuko, Milton Karisa, and Denis Iguma.

At releasing the squad where he will choose the best six or five to joined the already 20 named foreign based players, McKinstry commented;

As previously announced in addition to the squad of 20 foreign based players for the upcoming double header against South Sudan in the A, we would be looking to adding  5 or 6 Uganda Premier League players to the mix so that they can compete for places in the squad. In order to give the local based players the best support, we will be running an advance camp between 2nd and 8th November. In addition to that, we shall be able to have some early arrivals of foreign based players whose leagues to join this camp in Kampala. The camp will also help the local based players to push their levels higher and hopefully get some minutes on the field against South Sudan.’ Mckinstry.

Defenders: Ndahiro Derrick (Sc Villa), Galiwango Disan (Vipers SC), Willa Paul (Vipers SC), Mandela Ashraf (URA), Iguma Denis (KCCA FC), Kato Samuel ( (KCCA FC), Juuko Murushid (Express FC), Lwaliwa Halid (Vipers SC), Mbowa  Patrick ( URA FC)
Midfielders: Mawejje Tony (Police FC), Kyeyune Saidi (URA FC), Kagimu Shafiq (URA FC), Watambala Kairm (Vipers SC), Owori David ( Sc Villa), Anukani Bright (KCCA FC)
Forwards: Oriti Ibrahim (Vipers Sc), Karisa Milton (Vipers SC), Mukwala Stephen (URA FC), Ahebwa Brian (KCCA FC).

The training for the local based players will run from 2nd to 8th November 2020.
Uganda will take on South Sudan on 12th November at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende with kick off set for 4pm before facing off again 4 days later in Nairobi.
