AFCON U20: Congo was lucky to get a point – Mayanja
Uganda Hippos head coach Jackson Mayanja says Congo were lucky to share the spoils with his team following their 2-2 draw in Group B of the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Uganda came from behind to lead 2-1 at half time before conceding in the last twenty minutes of the thrilling match at Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia on Thursday night.
Titus Ssematimba and Saidi Mayanja scored for Uganda on either side of Loulendo’s opener and Princide Mombouli’s equaliser.
“The game wasn’t so good because the players refused to play the style we used to play,” a frustrated Jackson said.
“We missed a couple of chances, many chances were wasted so there’s nothing to say, Congo is a lucky team,” the former El Masry midfielder said at the post match press conference.
“I always say that when you score three and I score five I’m the winner, so the problem was if we had killed this game by scoring those goals we would have won.
“Although there were some mistakes with those two goals they were not very good goals to concede but I still believe the chances we got would have killed the game.”
The Hippos will face South Sudan in the East African derby on Sunday, 26 February at the Suez Canal Stadium.
