In just a space of hours, the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has achieved another significant milestone, gaining recognition from the World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) as an official affiliate.

This development comes on the heels of the UBF’s recent recognition by the African Boxing Union (ABU), further solidifying its position in the global boxing community.

According to Moses Muhangi, President of the Uganda Boxing Federation, “The partnership with WPBF signals a new era for professional boxing in Uganda.

It gives our athletes an avenue to compete at a higher level and strengthens our governance framework, which is essential for the sport’s sustainable growth.”

The WPBF’s acceptance of UBF was confirmed in a letter dated March 5, 2025, by WPBF President David Young. Young expressed confidence in the legitimacy and credibility of UBF’s operations, stating, “On behalf of the World Professional Boxing Federation, we are pleased to formally acknowledge and accept the UBF as an official affiliate of the WPBF”.

This recognition is expected to have a profound impact on Ugandan boxing.

Stakeholders believe it will provide local fighters with greater exposure and better opportunities to compete at the professional level.

With its growing influence on the global boxing scene, the UBF is poised to raise Uganda’s profile in the sport.

As the country’s boxers gain greater representation in major international competitions, the future of Ugandan boxing looks brighter than ever.
