Buganda Schools Sports Committee unveils roadmap for 2026 championship

The Buganda Kingdom Schools Sports Committee has held a technical meeting at Bulange to review last year’s performance and chart a pathway for the 2026 edition of its championship.

The meeting, attended by games teachers, the organising committee and media representatives, took place on a wet Thursday morning, February 19.

Registration officially opened the same day, while submission of players’ documents and albums is slated for March 9.

The official opening ceremony will be staged on March 12 at Kawanda SS, with competitions running until March 15.

Disciplines include football, volleyball, handball, basketball, badminton, chess, Scrabble, rugby, table tennis, netball and the traditional Buganda board game Omweeso.

Eligibility will be based on learners’ identification number, with age limits of 20 years for secondary and 14 for primary schools. Participation fees are set at Shs300,000 for secondary and Shs200,000 for primary schools.

From next year, hosting rights will be determined through competitive bidding.

Last year’s edition attracted 40 schools, including 17 primary schools, the highest number since 2012.

Organising committee chairperson Gerald Katamba said: “We try to improve the tournament in every edition, and I confirm this year’s edition will be better than last year’s edition.”

Principal Sports Officer Hannington Musoke added: “We are all employed because of sports and therefore we are all here because of sports.

We are glad we now have the feedback from you in regards to last year’s edition, and we promise to improve.

As committee members, we fighting hard to build a visual identity and branding is a priority to us.”
