Janan Secondary School throws its doors open for 2026 USSSA Elite Schools Championship

As the countdown to the 2026 USSSA Elite Schools Championship begins, Janan Secondary School in Bombo is already in top gear, confidently positioning itself as the perfect stage for one of Uganda’s most prestigious school sports events.

Scheduled to run from 26th February to 1st March 2026, the championship will bring together the top eight performers from last year’s ball games across seven disciplines. And according to Head Teacher Mukwaya Joseph, Janan is more than ready.

In an exclusive interview with Nim Sport Media, Mukwaya painted a picture of a school built not just for academics, but for sporting excellence.

“We have all the facilities needed,” he affirmed. “Two football grounds, two basketball courts, netball courts and a swimming pool. Everything required to host a competition of this magnitude is already in place.”

Hosting Without Disruption

Hosting a tournament during the school term often presents logistical headaches — especially when it comes to accommodating both learners and visiting teams. But at Janan, that challenge has already been solved.

“We have enough accommodation for our children and for the visitors,” Mukwaya explained confidently.

“I believe it’s only we who can do this at this level. We also have sufficient manpower to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.”

The head teacher views the opportunity as more than just an event — it’s a statement.

“We accepted to host this tournament because it adds value to our school. Our name is now out there because of this championship.”

A Culture Where Sports Are Mandatory

At Janan, sports are not an extracurricular afterthought — they are part of the school’s identity.

“We invest heavily in sports facilities because we want every child to participate in at least one discipline,” Mukwaya said.

“Here, it is mandatory for every learner to have a sport. And we have the space and infrastructure to make that possible.”

This philosophy has shaped the school into a sporting powerhouse and a natural choice to host elite-level competition.

Health, Safety and Welfare: Fully Covered

Beyond the playing fields, Janan has strengthened key support systems to match the demands of a national championship.

The school boasts a fully fledged health facility catering to both boys and girls. According to Sports Manager Ddamulira Akram, the medical department has recently been expanded.

“We understand how important health is,” Ddamulira noted. “We now have a doctor and several nurses on site to attend to students and athletes.”

Security is equally tight. The campus is fitted with surveillance cameras covering every corner, backed by vigilant security personnel.

A standby generator and solar power system ensure uninterrupted electricity supply — meaning the school never goes dark.

Hydration and nutrition have also been prioritized. The school has three purified drinking water points strategically placed around the campus.

“We know athletes need plenty of water,” Ddamulira explained.

“We have three purified water serving points. And when it comes to meals, Janan is well prepared. We are the only school that serves two breakfasts, lunch and dinner. Our dining hall accommodates more than 3,000 students. So everything is set.”
