UPL: Vipers edge Kitara to maintain top of the table status
Vipers SC defeated Kitara 3-0 at Masindi Stadium on Friday to maintain the top spot on the Ugandan Premier League table.
A goal from Yunus Ssentamu in either half and Paul Mucureezi’s second-half strike handed the visitors the three points.
It was the reigning champions who started the game on a high and in the second minute, they had already made an attempt on goal.
Karim Watambala was in a good area but despite having space and time, he shot wide.
The Venoms were at it again in the eighth minute. This time around, it was Disan Galiwango who unleashed a fierce shot from outside the danger zone but Kitara goalkeeper Ivan Akera dealt with it.
Two minutes later, the best chance of the game fell to Jamil Kalisa who failed to convert despite being in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
Kitara had no answers as their visitors looked organised and solid. In the 16th minute, they were bailed out by the crossbar after the goalkeeper made a poor clearance and the ball fell to Ibrahim Orit, who was denied by the woodwork.
After coming close several times, the champions finally got their goal in the 31st minute. Orit picked out Ssentamu and the latter kept his cool before finding the back of the net. It proved to be the only goal in the first half.
Three minutes after the break, Orit had a massive chance to double the advantage. The goalkeeper fumbled with the ball and it fell to the forward who fired over the bar from close range.
In the 62nd minute, the league leaders were awarded a penalty after a handball in the danger zone. Ssentamu rose to the occasion, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
The third goal came in the 73rd minute, this time around Mucureezi expertly curled his free-kick into the net to ensure the Venoms won by three goals.
Vipers are now on 42 points from 18 games level with URA FC who won 3-1 win at home against BUL FC.
