Uganda’s senior women’s football national team, the Crested Cranes, suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Algeria in their second international friendly match.

The game, played at Mostapha Tchacker Stadium in Algeria, saw Choutia Karchourni score the only goal in the 34th minute.

Fazila Ikwaput had an opportunity to equalize for Uganda but failed to capitalize on it.

Despite intense pressure for an equalizer, Uganda was unable to penetrate Algeria’s defense, resulting in a hard-fought loss.

This defeat marks Uganda’s second loss to Algeria, having previously lost 2-1 in their first encounter.

Following the match, Crested Cranes head coach Sherly Botes expressed gratitude to her players. “I commend my players for their resilience and improved performance, particularly in the second half. Although we deserved a better outcome, there are many positives to take away from this game.”

“We have a young team, with many teenagers showing great character and potential. We aim to build on this progress and continue improving with each opportunity. Despite facing a stronger opponent with a fully professional squad, we attacked vigorously and narrowed the gap.”

“Competing against formidable teams like Algeria presents valuable challenges, and I appreciate the efforts of FUFA president Eng. Moses Magogo and CEO Edgar Watson in securing top-tier opponents for us to play.”

Botes also addressed the challenges faced by local players in developing their skills.

“We aspire to build from the back and press high, but our players struggle due to inadequate facilities in Uganda. I hope to see improvements in infrastructure and coaching to support our players’ growth.”

The Crested Cranes will now return home and prepare for their upcoming matches in the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League.
