Uganda DanceSport National Youth Breaking championship set for early August

Uganda DanceSport Federation has confirmed that the National Youth Breaking Championship 2024 is set for Saturday 4th August at St Mark’s College Namagoma.

A total of 64 dancers, 32 of whom are girls selected from across 19 regions are set to take part in this championship.

Uganda’s top young 32 Boys and 32 Girls of ages between 14-18 will battle it out for glory.

From the championship, a team of eight (8) will be selected to represent Uganda at the forthcoming World DanceSport Federation Youth Breaking Championship in Wuxi, China scheduled for 28th to 29th September later this year.

The World Youth Breaking championship shall act as a ranking event from which top ranking athletes will book slots to the August 2026 youth Olympics in Dakar Senegal set for 31st October to 14th November.

The national youth championship shall also be used to select team Uganda for Gymnasiade games in Bahrain from 23rd to 30th October 2024.

Breaking boys, girls and Bon and Clyde, performing arts, HipHop and Latin are the dance categories to be in Bahrain.

In an interview with Uganda DanceSport Federation head of technical Edrine Serwakulya detailed the key highlights ahead of the August 4th championship.

“Over the times we have had several, however, we have never had one of the age categories that is going to happen.

In this very one, we are targeting 14-18 years athletes. It’s more of new faces to see this time round because most of the of our athletes we had in have been beyond 18 years.

Our target is to groom a very young crop of dancers to take to the 2026 Youth Olympics.

We have had a number of  competitions scout out the young talents that could represent Uganda so well in Dakar, Senegal.

From the recently concluded Schools championship, we have screened our top cream from which we eye the best eight to represent Uganda”. Edrine Serwakulya.

According to Serwakulya, Judging in this competition shall depend into three segments.

The Body segment which represents the physicality and athletism of the athletes.

Mind to represent creativity, character and style of the athletes whike dancing and soul represents interpretation and expression of the athletes to the music provided to him/her.
