Uganda Cricket Association parts ways with Head Coach Abhay Sharma
The Uganda Cricket Association has announced the departure of national team head coach Abhay Sharma, ending his 18-month tenure.
This decision comes despite the team’s dominant 66-run win over Nigeria in their final World Cup qualifying match.
Under Sharma’s guidance, Uganda achieved significant milestones, including their first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup appearance and impressive performances in the Challenge League B.
The team also registered memorable international victories, showcasing the coach’s positive impact on Ugandan cricket.
However, the team’s failure to qualify for the T20 World Cup for a second consecutive time likely played a role in Sharma’s exit.
Uganda’s campaign was marked by inconsistency, with losses to Zimbabwe and Tanzania ultimately costing them a spot in the tournament.
Sharma took charge of the Cricket Cranes in April 2024 and led the team through various tournaments.
Some notable highlights of his tenure include historic T20 World Cup appearance, Uganda’s first-ever appearance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which took place earlier this year.
Strong Challenge League B performances where the team impressed in the Challenge League B, showcasing their growth and potential is the other memorable feet in his tenure.
Under Abhay Sharma, Uganda registered notable wins against international opponents, demonstrating their capabilities.
The Uganda Cricket Association will now begin the search for a new head coach.
The focus will shift to rebuilding momentum and reigniting the team’s continental ambitions.
With new recruit Sumeet Verma showing promise, the team will look to build on their strengths and work on their weaknesses as they prepare for future challenges.
