St Noa Girls Secondary School-Zana has kicked off the CAF Africa Schools Girls Football Championship in Ghana with a thrilling 1-0 victory over defending champions South Africa.
Grace Kawino’s decisive goal secured the win for St Noa, who maximized points against the favorite South African team.
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s absence in Group B has left St Noa and South Africa to compete against each other and The Gambia.
St Noa’s next match is against The Gambia tomorrow afternoon, where a single point will guarantee their advancement to the semi-finals.
In other matches, hosts Ghana edged out Morocco 1-0 in their opening game, while Malawi surprisingly beat Benin 1-0 in the day’s final match.
The championship will continue tomorrow with St Noa facing The Gambia and South Africa taking on The Gambia.
The winners of the Girls’ competition will receive $300,000, with the runners-up and bronze medalists receiving $200,000 and $150,000, respectively, to support development projects in schools.
