In a thrilling conclusion to the group stage, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) secured a hard-fought point against defending champions Nkumba University, thanks in large part to the exceptional goalkeeping of Musasizi Shadat.

The match, played at Nkumba University’s home ground, ended in a barren draw, propelling IUIU to the top spot in Group A with 12 points.

Coach Haruna Kebba’s team had set their sights on grabbing a point from the defending champions to confirm their qualification to the quarterfinals for the second time in Pepsi University Football League history.

Their mission was accomplished, but not without the heroic efforts of Musasizi Shadat, who stood tall throughout the 90 minutes to deny Nkumba University a crucial win.

The draw has significant implications for the quarterfinal qualification, with IUIU now facing a more favorable path. Meanwhile, Makerere University, who have eight points, will host Victoria University, who sit at the bottom with one point, on Friday.

To surpass Nkumba’s goal difference, Makerere University will need to win by a margin of three goals.

Ndejje University, with nine points, will face Kumi University, who have seven points. A draw or a win for Kumi would favor Nkumba’s quarterfinal hopes.

So far, five universities have confirmed their spots in the quarterfinals: Uganda Martyrs University, Kampala University, Muteesa I Royal University, IUIU, and Bugema University.

The action resumes on Thursday at Kavule, where St. Lawrence will host UCU in a must-win encounter.
