In a nail-biting quarterfinal match, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) emerged victorious, defeating Kampala University (KU) 1-0 in Mbale on Thursday evening, with Tamubula Ismael scoring the decisive goal.

The win marked a crucial milestone for IUIU, who had drawn the first leg 1-1 in Nsambya and needed to capitalize on their home advantage.

The heroics of Tamubula proved to be the turning point in the match, as he latched onto a well-delivered cross from Mumali Faisal in the 14th minute, tapping into an empty net and sending the home crowd into jubilation.

The KU defense was caught off guard, and Tamubula’s clinical finish sealed the victory for IUIU.

The match was marked by intense battles between both teams, with KU desperate to find an equalizer.

Wanuume Gilbert whipped in a dangerous cross in the 20th minute, only to be thwarted by IUIU’s Shikanga, who made a crucial interception.

IUIU nearly doubled their lead moments later when Tamubula’s acrobatic effort off an Onongo header was spectacularly saved by KU goalkeeper Ozelle Brian.

The second half saw KU ramp up their attacks, with Kisa and Wanuume combining beautifully on the edge of the box in the 60th minute.

However, Kisa’s strike soared over the crossbar, and KU’s efforts were repeatedly thwarted by IUIU’s resolute defense.

Despite relentless attacks from KU in the dying minutes, IUIU’s defense held firm, clearing their lines and ensuring their place in the UFL semifinals.

With Uganda Martyrs University and St. Lawrence University already through, IUIU became the third team to book their semifinal spot.

The final slot now hangs in the balance, pending the verdict between Bugema University and Muteesa I Royal University.
