The highly anticipated Father Grimes Schools Team Chess Championships is set to begin this Sunday, May 4th, at Our Lady of Africa, Namilyango.

Over 160 schools from across the country, including both primary and secondary institutions, are expected to participate in the five-day tournament.

Defending champions St. Mary’s College, Kisubi and St. Andrews Kaggwa, Gombe will look to retain their titles in the Secondary Open and Secondary Girls categories, respectively.

St. Mary’s College, Kisubi, who lost just one game en route to their success last year, will aim to overcome the challenge of defending the trophy, a feat that no team has achieved since 2018.

In the Primary category, Peak Primary School will seek to claim their third successive championship in the girls section, having won the title with a perfect score last year.

Meanwhile, St. Miriam Dagan in Kamwokya will look to defend their title in the boys section, also having won with a perfect score.

The tournament holds significant importance, as it will be used to select Uganda’s representatives for the continental and world school events this year.

However, players born on or after January 1, 2005 (U20), will not be eligible for selection in the Secondary section, despite being allowed to participate.

Similarly, players born on or after January 1, 2011 (U14), will not be eligible for selection in the Primary section.

The best-performing teams and individuals will be awarded medals, and the top players will earn the opportunity to represent Uganda in international competitions.

With a rich history and competitive field, the Father Grimes Schools Team Chess Championships promises to be an exciting and thrilling event.
