In a groundbreaking achievement, Ugandan international Shadia Nankya has become the first Ugandan female footballer to join a top-tier club in the United States.

The Crested Cranes defender has signed a four-year contract with Washington Spirit, a powerhouse in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) since 2012 and winner of the league’s first title in 2021.

Nankya’s impressive career trajectory has earned her this historic opportunity.

She joins Washington Spirit from Egyptian side Masar FC, where she played a pivotal role in the team’s third-place finish at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Her outstanding performances at the continental level also earned her a spot in the tournament’s Best XI.

Additionally, she helped Masar FC win their second Egyptian Women’s Cup in 2024.

The former Uganda Martyrs Lubaga and UCU Lady Cardinals captain has been making waves in the football scene since 2018.

That year, she won the FUFA Women’s Cup top scorer award with nine goals, despite being a defender.

She also made her debut for the Crested Cranes in 2018, contributing to Uganda’s bronze medal wins at the CECAFA and COSAFA Championships.

Although Nankya faced a setback due to injury, which caused her to miss the 2022 CECAFA Women’s Championship and WAFCON, she has since bounced back with determination.

Her move to Egypt and now the US is a testament to her perseverance and talent.

At Washington Spirit, Nankya will have the opportunity to play alongside top talents like Trinity Rodman under the guidance of former Barcelona Women coach Jonatan Giraldez.

While several Ugandan female footballers have played in the US at the collegiate level, Nankya’s achievement marks a milestone as the first Ugandan female player to join a top-tier side.
