St Mark High School Kayunga have emerged as one of the standout teams at the ongoing Buganda Secondary Schools Boys Football Championship, delivering a remarkable performance to finish top of Group H at Kawanda Secondary School.
Making their maiden appearance in the tournament, the Kayunga-based side collected seven points to secure a place in the knockout stage.
After opening their campaign with a goalless draw against defending champions Kawempe Muslim Secondary School football team, St Mark returned strongly on day two.
They first defeated St Michael International School 3-1, with Ivan Kiganda, Dissan Mwebe and Jimmy Kyagulanyi finding the net, while Arthur Murungi scored the consolation.
St Mark then sealed top spot in the group with a composed 2-0 victory over Miriam SS Busabala.
Their rapid rise has also been attributed to the influence of an experienced coach Felix Ssekabuuza Kawooya who guided Uganda Secondary Schools Boys Football Championship 2024 winners St Julian High School football team.
The tactician reportedly moved with nearly a quarter of that title-winning squad to St Mark, instantly strengthening the team’s quality and mentality.
With that blend of experience and youthful energy, St Mark have quickly become one of the most difficult sides to face in the competition.
Elsewhere in the championship, Wampeewo Ntake Secondary School came from behind to beat St John’s High School Kazo 3-1 after Nasser Kalungi had given Kazo an early lead.
St Andrew Kaggwa Gombe High School also impressed, defeating Viena High School 2-0 through a brace from Aaron Sselumu.
Kawempe Royal College Bulaga and High Way SS Kiganda also registered 2-0 wins over Skyline Progressive SS and African Muslim School respectively.
With the group stage concluded, attention now turns to the knockout rounds as the tournament gathers momentum.
The tournament that started on Wednesday, the 11th will climax on Sunday 15th at Kawanda Secondary School.
