Uganda Names 21-Member Squad for 2025 Tokyo World Championships

The Uganda Athletics Federation has announced the final 21-member squad for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21.

The team will compete at the National Stadium, where the Tokyo 2021 Olympics were held.

Uganda’s best long-distance running duo, Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, will miss the championships due to personal reasons.

Cheptegei, the reigning World champion over 10,000m, has won the title three times in a row, joining an elite group of athletes that includes Great Britain’s Mo Farah and Ethiopian duo Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele.

Kiplimo, the reigning World Half Marathon champion and record holder, has also opted out of the championships.

The Ugandan team has been training at the Trinity Bible College in Kapchorwa for two weeks, preparing for the highly competitive event.

The team will depart in three batches, with the first batch flying out on September 10.
