SC Villa reignite title charge with commanding 2–0 victory over Maroons FC

Under the floodlights of the FUFA Kadiba Stadium on Thursday night, SC Villa rediscovered their cutting edge, dispatching Maroons FC 2–0 to breathe fresh life into their championship ambitions.

The record league champions had approached the fixture under mounting pressure, having been held to consecutive goalless draws by Lugazi FC and URA FC.

With the title race tightening, nothing short of victory would suffice—and Zeljko Kovacevic’s men delivered with authority.

Frank Ssebufu, previously wasteful in front of goal over the past two outings, set the tone emphatically.

The forward silenced his critics just two minutes after kickoff, pouncing early to hand the Jogoos a dream start.

Villa dominated much of the opening half, carving out opportunity after opportunity.

Patrick Jonah Kakende came within inches of extending the lead, only for Nicholas Kigozi to produce a heroic goal-line clearance.

Najib Yiga, too, threatened but could only find the side netting with a well-worked effort.

The visitors attempted to rally after the break, yet Villa’s intensity never waned.

Reagan Mpande, introduced for Kakende, injected fresh urgency and nearly made an instant impact, forcing a sharp save from goalkeeper Matovu.

Moments later, Hassan Mubiru was also denied as Villa pressed for a decisive second goal.

That breakthrough eventually arrived in the 84th minute. Andrew Otim, who had just replaced the industrious Ssebufu, applied a clinical finish after being expertly teed up by Mpande, sealing all three points in style.

The victory lifts SC Villa to fourth place on 34 points, narrowing the gap to four behind leaders Vipers SC.

Maroons, meanwhile, remain ninth with 18 points, their inconsistency continuing to hinder progress.

For Villa, however, this was more than just a win—it was a statement of renewed intent in a title race that is far from settled.
