New era for University Sports in Uganda as Wagoogo and Soigi take the helm
In a historic election that marked the end of a 20-year reign of Peninah Aligaweesa Kabenge, Kyambogo University’s Senior Sports Tutor, George Wagoogo, has been elected as the new President of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS).
Wagoogo secured a commanding 56 votes, defeating Busitema University’s Dr. Agnes Baluka Masajja, who garnered 31 votes.
“Definitely, I won the position and I want to thank all the members of the electorate who have given me this mandate,” Wagoogo said in his victory speech.
He pledged to implement immediate reforms within AUUS, stating, “The first 100 days we want to look at the governance system that has been running AUUS. We want to set up new structures that are workable.”
Martha Soigi, a renowned sports administrator and versatile sportswoman from Kampala University, was elected First Vice President with an impressive 61 votes.
She defeated Mountains of the Moon University’s Nsubuga Mustapha, who secured 24 votes.
Soigi’s priorities include increasing women’s involvement in sports administration and participation.
The elections were observed by prominent officials, including Dr. Rev. Duncans Mugumya, Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports in the Ministry of Education and Sports, and were widely described as transparent and peaceful. Members expressed optimism that the new leadership will usher in a fresh era of governance, accountability, and growth for university sports across Uganda.
