Muhangi secures third term ahead of UBF polls, shifts focus to commercialising boxing

Kampala — The elective General Assembly of the Uganda Boxing Federation had been slated for February 28, but the anticipated vote will no longer determine the presidency after incumbent Moses Muhangi emerged unopposed at the close of nominations.

Muhangi automatically secured a third term at the helm of the federation when no challenger returned nomination forms within the stipulated timeframe, effectively sealing his re-election before delegates could head to the polls.

The development shifts the tone of the upcoming assembly from a competitive contest to a formal endorsement of continuity in leadership.

Federation insiders say the unopposed return reflects confidence in Muhangi’s stewardship over the past two terms, during which he oversaw structural reforms and domestic competitions aimed at revitalising the sport.

Now assured of another four-year mandate, Muhangi has pledged to prioritise the commercial transformation of Ugandan boxing.

He argues that financial sustainability — through sponsorships, structured leagues and stronger branding — will be central to improving athlete welfare and raising performance standards.

Among the initiatives expected to take centre stage is the strengthening of domestic competitions to attract corporate backing and create steady revenue streams for clubs and boxers.

While some observers note that unopposed elections limit competitive debate, supporters within the boxing fraternity interpret the outcome as a sign of unity and stability ahead of a critical phase focused on professionalisation.

With the presidency settled before the February 28 gathering, attention at the General Assembly is now likely to turn to other administrative matters and the federation’s roadmap for commercial growth in the coming term.
