Mugabi’s maiden goal lifts Uganda past South Sudan in AFCON Qualifier

The Uganda senior men’s national football team, the Uganda Cranes, defeated South Sudan 1-0 on Friday in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.

Bevis Mugabi scored the only goal, securing three crucial points for Uganda. The goal came in the second half, two minutes after the restart.

Allan Okello’s cross found Jude Ssemugabi, whose header was saved by the goalkeeper.

However, unmarked Bevis Mugabi tapped in the rebound, scoring his first-ever national team goal on his 23rd appearance.

South Sudan had a chance to equalize, but Uganda’s defense cleared the ball off the line in the final bend of the game.

Shortly, forward Denis Omedi forced a save from the goalkeeper in the dying minutes, as Uganda held on.

The win takes Uganda to seven points from three games. They will face South Sudan again in the return leg on Tuesday, the 15th October in Juba.
