Motocross Cranes return home with heads held high

The gallant Motocross Cranes have returned home with their heads held high after finishing third at the 2025 FIM-Africa Motocross of African Nations (MXoAN) held in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The team, comprising talented riders from Uganda, showcased their skills and determination, earning a well-deserved bronze medal.

Team captain Gift Tabula Ssebuguzi emphasized the importance of team cohesion ahead of international representation.

“Ahead of any international engagement, a train-together session is needed for riders to represent the country, creating a bond between riders,” Ssebuguzi outlined.

He cited an incident where Hellena Birungi’s bike failed to start in heat 2, and she was left at the start gate by other riders, highlighting the need for riders to work together and support each other.

The Motocross Cranes faced significant challenges at the 2025 MXoAN, including the sandy track, which proved difficult for many riders.

The team’s performance was also affected by a lack of funds, which limited some star riders’ ability to participate in the championship.

Despite these challenges, the team remained positive and determined, with support from rider parents and fans like Paul Musedde and Joshua Muwanguzi.

The team’s brighter moment came when the junior ladies dominated the podium slots in MX50 and MX65.

Defending African champion Hellena Birungi Ainomugisha rode her heart out to retain her title, despite facing a setback when her bike failed to start in heat 2.

Jamairah Makumbi also impressed, sweeping clean all three heats in the MX65 ladies’ juniors to claim the African championship title.

Uganda’s performance at the 23rd edition of the MXoAN was recognized by FIM-Africa in an appreciation letter, highlighting the team’s growth, spirit, and sportsmanship.

With Namibia set to host the MXoAN in 2026 and the 25th anniversary approaching in 2027, the future of African motocross looks bright.

The Motocross Cranes’ third-place finish is a testament to the team’s potential, and with continued support and investment, they are poised to achieve even greater success in the years to come.
