Hoima City Stadium: A symbol of sporting excellence handed over to government

In a momentous ceremony, contractors SUMMA have officially handed over the iconic Hoima City Stadium to the government through the National Council of Sports (NCS), ahead of its grand commissioning by President Museveni on December 24, 2025.

The multi-sports complex, built at a cost of $129m, is a testament to the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure in Uganda.

NCS, the body responsible for overseeing public sports facilities, officially received the facility in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, and the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Ministry of Education and Sports Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports, Rev. Canon Dr. Duncans Mugumya, presided over the technical handover, while Ministry of Works Commissioner for Public Structures, Eng. Edward Ssimbwa, presented contractors MS SUMMA with a certification of completion.

“We are grateful to President Museveni and the First Lady, Maama Janet Museveni, for their unwavering support in making the Hoima dream a reality,” said NCS Board Chairperson, Ambrose Tashobya.

SUMMA’s Project Manager, Murat Altun, handed over the instruments to Tashobya, marking the completion of the project, which was finished five months ahead of schedule.

NCS General Secretary, Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, praised SUMMA for their commitment, efficiency, and quality of work, stating, “The Turkish firm has delivered a world-class facility that will serve the people of Uganda for generations to come.”

The stadium boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a 2000-seater indoor arena, semi-Olympic size swimming pool, training pitch, and fully equipped gym.

The facility is set to host a friendly match between Kitara FC and KCCA FC on Wednesday, as part of the commissioning celebrations.

The handover ceremony was attended by government officials, including Resident City Commissioner Badru Mugabi and Mayor Brian Kaboyo, who witnessed the culmination of a project that promises to put Hoima City on the map as a hub for sports excellence.
