Game Over!: UBF receives official recognition from ABU

The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has achieved a significant milestone, receiving official recognition from the African Boxing Union (ABU).

This development is set to elevate professional boxing in Uganda, providing local boxers with increased opportunities on the continental and global stage.

UBF President Moses Muhangi expressed his excitement over the recognition, stating, “As UBF and myself as President, we are very happy that the African Boxing Union (ABU) and the World Boxing Council (WBC) have recognized the Uganda Boxing Federation as the official body responsible for managing and sanctioning professional boxing activities in Uganda.”

The recognition follows a review of the Uganda Sports Act 2023, which aims to streamline governance and development in Ugandan sports.

ABU President Houcine Houichi confirmed the recognition in a letter dated March 4, 2025, stating, “This decision aligns with our commitment to ensuring proper governance, regulation, and development of boxing across the African continent.” Partly reads the letter.

With this recognition, Ugandan boxers can expect structured development programs, exposure to international competitions, and potential partnerships with global bodies like the WBC.

The UBF will now collaborate with the ABU to promote professional boxing and host ABU championship events in Uganda.

The recognition has far-reaching implications for Ugandan boxing, resolving past confusion within the professional boxing fraternity regarding oversight.

As Muhangi emphasized, “It is now clear that the Uganda Boxing Federation is the official authority for professional boxing in Uganda.”

This development is poised to enhance boxing development, increase participation in major tournaments, and strengthen governance within the sport in Uganda.
