FIFA U17 World Cup: Uganda’s Cubs stun Senegal, advance to round of 16
In a thrilling encounter at the Aspire Zone, Pitch 7 in Qatar, Uganda’s U17 Boys National Football Team, the Cubs, continued their fairytale run at the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup, edging Senegal 1-0 in the round of 32.
Abubakali Walusimbi’s ferocious strike just outside the area in the 15th minute proved to be the decisive moment, firing Uganda into the lead.
The goal was a result of excellent teamwork, with Brian Ijara winning possession in midfield, passing to captain Hamuza Ssengooba, who teed up Walusimbi for the finish.
Senegal’s relentless attacks in the second half were thwarted by outstanding goalkeeping from Edrisah Waibi, who made game-defining saves to secure the win. Waibi’s heroics earned him the man-of-the-match award.
Uganda’s victory sets up a round-of-16 clash with the winner of Germany vs. Burkina Faso.
The Cubs, led by coach Brian Ssenyondo, are riding high on confidence after their historic win over France in the group stage.
