ELITE GAMES 2026: Kawanda roars with hard-fought victory on day one

Kawanda Secondary School’s boys’ handball team has set an impressive tone for the 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Elite Games with a nail-biting victory on Day One.

The team secured a hard-fought 30-29 win over Bombo Army in a thrilling opening match.

The victory marked a strong start for Kawanda Secondary in their debut at the prestigious event.

Despite the intensity of the game, Kawanda’s resilience saw them edge past their opponents, earning their first win of the tournament.

In the girls’ category, Gombe Secondary School was dominant throughout the day. They kicked off their campaign with a commanding 46-12 victory over Bombo Army.

Later in the day, Gombe continued their impressive form, winning 35-12 against Maryhill Secondary School.

In the boys’ category, Gombe also had a comfortable win, easing past Bombo Army 39-19 in their second fixture.

Looking ahead, tomorrow’s fixtures promise more excitement with Kawanda facing Gombe in the morning and Bombo Army in the afternoon.

In the girls’ category, Maryhill will go head-to-head with Bombo Army in the morning and Gombe in the afternoon.

The tournament, which began on Thursday, 26th February, will culminate on Sunday, 1st March, at Janan Secondary School in Bombo.

Six sporting disciplines, including basketball, rugby 7s, football, netball, volleyball, and handball, are being contested.
