Dr. Donald Rukare makes history as first Ugandan and African president of Commonwealth Sport
In a landmark vote at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, Dr. Donald Rukare was elected President of Commonwealth Sport, becoming the first African to helm the global sporting body.
A distinguished sports administrator and human‑rights lawyer, Rukare brings three decades of expertise in sport, law and development to the role.

His illustrious career includes serving as a World Aquatics Bureau Member, Vice President of Africa Aquatics, Vice President of Commonwealth Sport, President of Commonwealth Games Uganda, and most recently, Interim Commonwealth Sport President.
His election arrives at a pivotal moment as the Movement gears up for Glasgow 2026, the Malta 2027 Youth Games, and the 2030 Centenary Games in Ahmedabad, India.

Rukare pledged to champion an athlete‑centred agenda, bolster support for member associations, and drive the “Games Reset” strategy—an initiative aimed at enabling more nations to host the Games sustainably.
“I am deeply honoured… Our athletes deserve every opportunity to shine,” Rukare declared in his acceptance speech.
Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir lauded his bold, collaborative leadership, noting that it aligns perfectly with the organisation’s transformation goals.
Dr. Rukare’s ascension marks a major milestone for Uganda and Africa’s influence in global sports governance.
