CAF CL: Mamelodi Sundowns completes group stage in style
Mamelodi Sundowns have completed their group phase campaign in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League in emphatic fashion, thrashing Al Merrikh 3-0 at home on Saturday.
The Brazilians who were already qualified for the quarter finals were looking to end the group stage strong.
They did so emphatically with goals from George Maluleka, Bradley Ralani and Kermit Erasmus winning them maximum points.
They now sit top of Group A with 16 points out of a possible 18 while Merrikh suffered their fourth loss in a row to finish bottom with just four points.
Finishing off at home, Sundowns were off to a perfect start when Maluleka broke the deadlock with an emphatic header after quarter of an hour, finishing off a cross from Aubrey Modiba.
They held on to the 1-0 lead till the second half, when they returned with as much venom.
They doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Ralani made the most of a defensive error at the back for Merrikh before planting the ball home.
Six minutes later, Erasmus sealed the game with the third goal off a well taken volley, some more nervous defending from Merrikh gifting the home side a goal.
The victory is a huge morale booster for the 2016 champions who now await to know their quarter final opponents when the draw is conducted in Cairo on April 5th.
