Bugema dethrone Group B leaders Muteesa I in a statement win at Nakivubo

Bugema University reignited the Group B title race with a commanding 2–1 victory over previously unbeaten Muteesa I Royal University on Tuesday evening, tightening the margins at the summit of the University Football League.

Played at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, the contest burst into life after a tense, goalless first half.

Muteesa, leaders coming into the fixture, had absorbed sustained early pressure as Bugema squandered two clear openings inside 30 minutes.

The breakthrough arrived three minutes after the restart.

Sawa Eric bent in a sumptuous free-kick in the 48th minute, an effort of precision and poise that shifted momentum decisively.

Sensing vulnerability, Bugema pressed on and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Ssenyonga Owen converted from the penalty spot to double the advantage.

Muteesa responded instantly, Brian Rwothomio finishing neatly from Geoffrey Sserugo’s pass to halve the deficit. Yet despite a spirited late surge, the leaders could not restore parity.

The result lifts Bugema to eight points from four matches, just one behind Muteesa, whose nine-point tally now carries the blemish of defeat.
