Buddo Secondary School have laboured past Greenlight Islamic Secondary School to lift the Buganda Schools boys’ football championship title after a narrow 2–1 victory in the final.
The thrilling contest was played on Sunday afternoon at Kawanda Secondary School Grounds in front of a huge, noisy crowd that witnessed a tightly contested encounter between two determined sides.
Abaasa Ali Kisambira emerged as the hero for Buddo Secondary School, scoring a decisive brace, while Simon Peter Okwi found the net for Greenlight Islamic Secondary School.
Buddo struck first through Kisambira in the 5th minute to take an early 1–0 lead.
However, Greenlight responded swiftly, with Okwi producing a classy finish just eight minutes later to restore parity and ensure the teams went into the halftime break level at 1–1.
Moments after the restart, Buddo regained control of the match.
Only three minutes into the second half, Kisambira struck again to complete his brace and restore Buddo’s lead, a goal that eventually proved decisive as Buddo held firm to secure the championship.
To reach the final, Greenlight Islamic Secondary School – Nansana had delivered a commanding performance in the semifinal, dismantling Standard High School – Zzana (STAHIZA) 4–1 in a largely one-sided encounter.
The match, however, began on a surprising note as Standard High School Zzana struck early.
Daniel Mugisha put STAHIZA ahead in just the second minute, handing his side a dream start following their impressive quarterfinal victory over St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School.
Greenlight quickly recovered from the setback and gradually took control of the game.
Simon Okwi spearheaded the comeback with a superb brace, while Elvis Kimuli and Mark Dandali also found the net to complete a dominant turnaround that ended in a convincing 4–1 victory.
Earlier in the day at Kawanda Secondary School, last year’s losing finalists Buddo SS produced an equally commanding performance in the other semifinal, brushing aside Highway Secondary School Kiganda 4–0.
Baaba Francis opened the scoring before Ambrose Aboi doubled the lead, with Kusamba Abaasa and Geoffrey Nyonyintono later adding further goals to seal the emphatic win.
