Black Pirates begin title defense with thrilling win over KOBs
Defending champions Black Pirates got their 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership campaign off to a winning start, edging out old rivals KOBs 26-24 in a pulsating season opener at Kings Park Arena, Bweyogerere, on Saturday.

Pirates dominated early, with tries from Frank Kidega, Haruna Muhammad, and Eliphaz Emong giving them a 21-7 halftime lead. KOBs fought back strongly after the break, with Rasul Abiriga’s penalty and tries from Mike Otto and Faraj Odugo setting up a tense finish.
Pirates coach Marvin Odongo praised the contest, saying, “I am happy for the win, but also for the KOBs boys for giving us a really good encounter. Games against KOBs are always tough. We made errors, but we are grateful for the result.”

The win puts Pirates back on familiar ground, while KOBs leave with positives despite another painful near miss.
Other results saw Impis beat Warriors 44-15, Heathens defeat Kakira Simbas 34-13, and Toyota Buffaloes cruise past Hippos 40-17.
