SC Villa and Vipers SC boycott UPL press conference, tensions rise ahead of double header

Tension continues to rise a the pre-match press conference for the highly anticipated Uganda Premier League’s first-ever double header fixtures was marked by the absence of giants SC Villa and Vipers SC.

The event, held at Serena Hotel in Kampala, was attended by KCCA FC and Kitara FC, alongside League Manager Mr. Owori Eric Eron and FUFA 3rd Vice President in charge of clubs, Hon. Nakiwala Florence Kiyingi.

SC Villa, Vipers SC, and NEC FC have openly opposed the new three-round league format, citing concerns that haven’t been fully addressed by FUFA.

This boycott is a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute between the clubs and the governing body.

In contrast, Kitara FC and KCCA FC demonstrated their commitment to the upcoming fixtures.

Kitara’s chairperson, ASP Nyaika Gilbert, expressed readiness to host the blockbuster fixtures at the refurbished Namboole Stadium, urging fans to turn up in large numbers.

As scheduled, SC Villa will take on KCCA FC will Viper SC will be up for Kitara Football Club.

KCCA FC’s Business Development Manager, Joshua Nagenda, vowed to give SC Villa a tough evening, saying, “The visitors should come prepared for showtime.”

League manager Owori emphasized that fixtures remain binding, stating, “When the host accepts the venue that we present, it is up to the visitor. He has no option apart from honoring the fixture.”

This stance suggests that the league will proceed as scheduled, despite the resistance from SC Villa, Vipers SC, and NEC FC.

The double header, scheduled for October 4th at Namboole Stadium, could prove decisive in shaping the fate of the defiant clubs.

With Villa, Vipers, and NEC yet to kick a ball in the new format, the upcoming weekend may determine whether their resistance continues or whether football takes center stage once again.
