CAF Women’s Champions League: Kampala Queens’ dreams dashed in penalty heartbreak
Kampala Queens’ quest for a maiden CAF Women’s Champions League final appearance came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.
Despite a solid performance, the Ugandan representatives were edged out by Rayon Sports Women of Rwanda in a tense penalty shootout, losing 4-3 after a goalless draw in 120 minutes of play.
The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams showcasing impressive defensive skills and goalkeepers making crucial saves to keep their teams in the game.
In extra time, Kampala Queens pushed forward aggressively but struggled to find the back of the net, ultimately falling short.
The penalty shootout proved to be the deciding factor, with Rayon Sports’ goalkeeper Angeline Ndakimana making two saves on Cathy Nagadya and Zaituni Namagambe’s attempts.
Meanwhile, Teddy Najuuma, Shakira Nakwanga, and Joanita Ainembabazi successfully converted their penalties for Kampala Queens.
Although eliminated from the competition, Kampala Queens still have a chance to claim a bronze medal.
They will face Kenya Police Bullets in the third-place playoff who lost 2-4 in penalties to JKT Queens in the semi-finals.
Rayon Sports Women, on the other hand, have advanced to the final, where they will play holders JKT Queens.
JKT beat Kenya Police Bullets 4-2 in penalties after a 1-all draw after 120 minutes.
