Clubs ask FUFA to invest proposed funds in the old format which has existed since 1968

A crucial meeting between the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and Uganda Premier League clubs was held at Serena Hotel, Kampala, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The meeting aimed to discuss the proposed new three-phase league format for the 2025/26 season, which has been a subject of controversy among clubs.

The clubs, led by Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, expressed their concerns about the new format, citing lack of consultation and sensitization.

Mulindwa emphasized that the clubs had unanimously agreed to engage FUFA and address the issues surrounding the competition reforms.

He cited the example of the government’s introduction of VAT, which faced backlash but is now appreciated after extensive sensitization.

FUFA President Moses Magogo acknowledged having a good interaction with the clubs and appreciated their concerns.

He stated that the new league format may be dropped or modified pending further consultations.

Magogo emphasized that FUFA loves engagements and listening to stakeholders, but is also strong in its convictions.

The outcome of the meeting is uncertain, with Magogo stating that the new format may be adopted or dropped depending on the outcome of the discussions.

The clubs have asked FUFA for more investment and have expressed excitement about the expected increase in funding for the new season.

They have requested that the funds be invested in the old format, which has been in existence since 1968.

Despite the challenges, both parties seem to be working towards a consensus.

Mulindwa expressed hope that football will win, regardless of the outcome.

The meeting was attended by 13 clubs, with two absent with apologies.

The fate of the new league format will be determined in the coming days, following further consultations between FUFA and the clubs.
