Former world champion Hon. Acon inspires Uganda to athletics triumph at East Africa Parliamentary Games
Uganda’s Parliamentary team has clinched the overall trophy in the Athletics category at the ongoing East Africa Parliamentary Games, inspired by the remarkable performance of former international star, Hon. Julius Acon.

The 1994 World Junior Athletics Championships 1500M champion has won two medals, including a gold in the 1500M and a silver in the 800M, showcasing his enduring athletic prowess.
Despite a reduced turnout due to election-related commitments, Acon expressed pride in the team’s resilience and performance.

“Not many of us showed up due to elections, but the few who came performed well although we are very unfit,” he said.
“I personally won the 1500m on Monday, today I was in the 800m and I won silver.
Our women’s team has performed very well. They won both races. We’re likely to finish in position one or two.”
Acon’s impressive track record includes being the first Ugandan to win a gold medal at the World Junior Athletics Championships and representing Uganda at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Games.

His leadership has helped Uganda secure the overall Athletics trophy, with other shining legislators like Odoi Onen and Ochan Patrick delivering a one-two finish in the 1500M.

Uganda’s success extends beyond Athletics, with gold medals in Basketball, Football, Netball, and Darts, positioning them strongly for the overall championship trophy.
The team is expected to add more medals to their tally, with the walking race and tug-of-war competition yielding impressive results.
